Imperial prosecutor Ernest Pinard
The case was argued by Ernest Pinard, the imperial prosecutor, at the trial that opened on 29 January 1857. He failed to win a conviction — Flaubert was acquitted on 7 February. Pinard would later prosecute Baudelaire's *Les Fleurs du mal* the same year, winning that one.
