Lawrence's Philosophy

Lawrence was a serious thinker about the link between body, mind, and industrial life. His essay "Pornography and Obscenity" drew a line between genuine eroticism, which celebrates connection, and pornography, which reduces bodies to objects.

The truly obscene thing in modern culture, he argued, was not sexual frankness but the systematic denial of physical experience that industry demanded. Workers' bodies were tools and wives' bodies were accessories; only honest physical connection between equals could restore what the machine age had taken.
