The Awakening still resonates because the conditions it describes have not fully disappeared. Edna anticipated second-wave feminism by sixty years — her demands for creative freedom, sexual self-determination, and an independent identity were exactly what women would voice en masse in the 1960s and 70s. The novel also carries a warning: an awakening without community or structural support leads to isolation rather than liberation. Chopin's refusal to judge Edna was the radical act, and the furious reviews only proved her point.
