Whatever its literary merits, Fifty Shades changed how the industry thinks. It showed that fanfiction can feed mainstream success and that self-publishing can produce a bestseller, weakening the gatekeeping power of traditional publishers. And it did all this fast: it normalized women's sexual fantasies in popular culture at a speed and scale that surprised everyone in the business.
