LESSON 1 · Books That Shaped the World

Legacy Across Millennia

The Odyssey's influence stretches far beyond literature. James Joyce structured Ulysses as a modern Dublin retelling. The Coen Brothers based O Brother, Where Art Thou? on its plot. Margaret Atwood's The Penelopiad retells the story from Penelope's perspective, questioning centuries of male-centered readings.

Every road movie, every homecoming narrative, every story where a clever underdog outwits stronger opponents carries Homer's DNA. The poem also gave us the word "odyssey" itself — meaning any long, transformative journey. Few works of art have so thoroughly embedded themselves in human language and thought that we use their vocabulary without realizing the source.
