LESSON 7 · Books That Shaped the World

History Repeating

The Buendías are cursed with compulsive repetition — the same names, the same mistakes, the same doomed romances across generations. This cyclical structure mirrors Latin American political history, where revolutions produce new tyrants who replicate the old ones.

The banana massacre in the novel is based on a real 1928 event in Ciénaga, Colombia, where the army killed striking workers and the government erased the incident from official records. Márquez restored this buried history through fiction.
