LESSON 8 · Books That Shaped the World

Letters from Transylvania

Published in 1897, Dracula is told entirely through documents — diary entries, letters, newspaper clippings, and ship logs. Jonathan Harker travels to Transylvania on a real estate transaction and gradually realizes Count Dracula is an undead predator planning to move to England. Bram Stoker researched the novel for seven years.

The epistolary format — multiple narrators piecing together a threat from fragments of information — mimics how information spreads across modern society. No single character sees the complete picture, just as no single news source captures the full reality.
