LESSON 1 · A Literary World Tour
Gods with Flaws
Greek gods were petty, jealous, and violent — humans with superpowers rather than remote cosmic forces. Zeus cheats constantly. Hera retaliates viciously. Athena plays favorites. Their flaws made the universe feel governed by recognizable emotions rather than inscrutable divine will.

Unlike the remote, perfect gods of later monotheistic traditions, Greek deities were comprehensible and unpredictable. Bad things happened because a god was angry, jealous, or bored. The chaos of life made a kind of terrible, familiar sense.
