Over 2,500 years old
Aeschylus's The Persians, written in 472 BCE, is the oldest surviving play in Western literature. Tradition credits an earlier figure, **Thespis**, with inventing the actor around 534 BCE by stepping out of the singing chorus to play characters himself.
