The elephant-headed god Ganesha
By tradition the sage **Vyasa** composed the epic aloud while **Ganesha** transcribed it. The condition: Vyasa had to recite without pause. When Ganesha's pen broke mid-flow, he snapped off one of his own **tusks** to keep writing — which is why he is often shown with a single tusk.
