LESSON 3 · A Literary World Tour
Ibsen's Revolution
Henrik Ibsen transformed world theater from Norway, a country most Europeans barely noticed. When Nora Helmer slams the door at the end of A Doll's House in 1879, walking out on her husband and children, it was called the loudest sound in theatrical history — the moment domestic drama became high art.

Ibsen proved that a woman confronting her marriage could carry the same dramatic weight as a king confronting fate. A woman slamming a door became the most revolutionary sound in theater history, and Norwegian literature became a mirror in which the entire Western world recognized itself.
