LESSON 5 · A Literary World Tour
Beatrice and Divine Love
Beatrice Portinari — a Florentine woman Dante met only twice and loved from a distance — becomes his guide through Paradise. She represents divine love and theological wisdom, yet she began as a real person whose beauty struck him at age nine. Beatrice embodies Dante's central belief: that human love, properly understood, is a path to divine love. Earthly beauty is not a distraction from spiritual truth but a window through which the divine becomes visible.
