LESSON 5 · A Literary World Tour

Dante's Legacy

Dante's influence on Western culture is virtually immeasurable. He invented the Italian literary language through sheer force of artistic will. His vision of Hell shaped the Western imagination of the afterlife more than any theological text, giving us the concentric circles of punishment that persist in art.

Placing real, identifiable people in the afterlife created political satire of unprecedented audacity. Exile, rather than destroying him, produced art of unprecedented ambition — transforming personal catastrophe into universal vision. Seven centuries later, his journey through Hell still defines how the West pictures the afterlife.
