LESSON 2 · Overhyped or Underrated?
Coelho's Journey
Before The Alchemist, Paulo Coelho lived an extraordinary life. His parents had him institutionalized three times, convinced his desire to be a writer was mental illness. He worked as a songwriter, theater director, and journalist, and was imprisoned under Brazil's military dictatorship.
Then he walked the Camino de Santiago, the pilgrimage route that transformed his outlook and directly inspired the novel. His insistence on following your Personal Legend comes not from naive optimism but from years of conforming to others' expectations — which he describes as worse than any external hardship.
