Before The Alchemist, Paulo Coelho lived an extraordinary life. His parents had him institutionalized three times, convinced his desire to be a writer was mental illness. He worked as a songwriter, theater director, and journalist, and was imprisoned under Brazil's military dictatorship.

Then he walked the Camino de Santiago, the pilgrimage route that transformed his outlook and directly inspired the novel.
