LESSON 3 · Overhyped or Underrated?
The Impossible Voyage
Published in 2001, Life of Pi follows Pi Patel, a sixteen-year-old Indian boy who survives 227 days adrift in the Pacific Ocean on a lifeboat with a 450-pound Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. Canadian author Yann Martel spent about two and a half years researching marine survival, zoology, and comparative religion — part of the roughly four and a half years it took him to write the novel.

The survival details are meticulously researched and scientifically plausible — solar stills for water, fishing techniques, territory management with a large predator. This grounding in real science makes the fantastic premise feel earned and credible rather than arbitrary.
