LESSON 3 · Overhyped or Underrated?

The Carnivorous Island

Midway through the voyage, Pi finds a floating island made entirely of algae — lush, green, and seemingly paradisiacal. He and Richard Parker rest and recover there. But at night the island's pools turn acidic, dissolving the fish in them, and Pi discovers a human tooth wrapped in the vegetation: the island slowly consumes anything that stays. The episode works as an allegory about comfort and complacency. A paradise that asks you never to leave is really a trap — any relationship, job, or belief that feels nourishing yet quietly devours those who refuse to go.
