LESSON 4 · Overhyped or Underrated?
The Fugitive's Gift
With Shantaram, the gift and the flaw are the same thing. Roberts's life as a criminal gave him a view of Mumbai that respectable writers almost never get, and he poured it onto the page with rare, controversial intimacy. The charge of romanticizing poverty is fair. But pretending the slums simply do not exist helps no one. Few books are this flawed and this unforgettable at once.
