LESSON 5 · Overhyped or Underrated?
The Loneliest Genius
As Charlie's intelligence soars past normal levels and into genius territory, his relationships collapse one by one. The coworkers he thought were his friends were actually bullies who laughed at him. His intellectual mentors cannot keep up with him. He becomes too smart for everyone around him — brilliant but completely isolated.

Keyes demonstrates that intelligence without emotional maturity is not a gift but a form of torture. Charlie can see everything — including the cruelty he was previously too limited to recognize — but his emotional capacity has not expanded at the same rate.
