Flowers for Algernon poses questions with no comfortable answers. Is it better to be happy and intellectually limited or aware and suffering? The novel makes no judgment. Its real ache comes from the reversal: it forces readers to feel the loss of self from the inside — to know what it is like to watch your own mind crumble while you still understand exactly what you are losing.
