LESSON 1 · Sci-Fi That Saw the Future
Huxley's Later Years
Huxley spent his later decades exploring consciousness through mescaline and LSD, recording his experiences in The Doors of Perception, which later gave Jim Morrison's band its name. He grew increasingly drawn to Eastern philosophy and meditation.
His final novel, Island (1962), imagined a utopia blending Western science with Eastern practice — his hopeful answer to Brave New World's despair. Huxley died on November 22, 1963, the same day as C.S. Lewis and President Kennedy. At his request, his wife administered LSD as he was dying.
