The Messiah Problem

Paul Atreides rises as the messianic figure Muad'Dib, fulfilling prophecies planted centuries earlier by the Bene Gesserit sisterhood to manipulate indigenous populations. But Herbert meant Paul's story as a warning against charismatic leaders, not a celebration.

The prophecies are real, but they were manufactured by a secret society as a long-term control mechanism. Religious fervor, once ignited, creates a messianic machine that even the messiah himself cannot control or stop.
