LESSON 3 · Sci-Fi That Saw the Future
Resource and Empire
The spice is transparently oil. Arrakis is the Middle East. The great powers — the Emperor, the Great Houses, the Spacing Guild — all depend on a resource they cannot produce or replace. Water scarcity, resource wars, and the exploitation of indigenous peoples are more pressing concerns now than when Herbert wrote.

The pattern Herbert identified — addiction, exploitation, conflict — maps onto oil politics, rare earth minerals, and water rights. Dune recognizes that resource wars follow the same script across centuries.
