Shifgrethor and Politics

Gethenian culture runs on shifgrethor — an intricate code of honor and face-saving that governs every political and personal exchange. With no permanent gender hierarchy, power flows through different channels: reputation, obligation, and the careful negotiation of mutual dignity.

Le Guin did not simply delete gender and leave everything else intact. She traced the cascading consequences: no patriarchy, no sexual division of labor, no gendered violence. The result is a society with its own strengths and dysfunctions — different from ours, but not utopian.
