LESSON 1 · Verses That Moved the World

The Whirling Dervishes

Rumi did not found a formal order in his lifetime; he was a Sufi teacher with a devoted circle. The Mevlevi Order was established in his name after his death in 1273 by his successor Husam al-Din Chelebi and his son Sultan Walad. Its members practice the sema — the meditative spinning ceremony known as the "whirling dervish" dance. The spinning represents the soul's journey toward truth, revolving around the heart as the planets revolve around the sun.

The sema is not performance but active meditation: repetitive motion meant to dissolve the ego until the practitioner feels unity with the divine. For Rumi, the body was not an obstacle to spiritual experience but a vehicle for it.
