Poems That Outlived Time

The sonnets matter far beyond their craft. They document same-sex desire in Elizabethan England with a tenderness no amount of scholarly hedging can explain away. The English sonnet form became a precision instrument for thought, later adopted by Milton, Wordsworth, Keats, and nearly every major English-language poet since. And Shakespeare's central promise — that poetry defeats time — proved literally true in his own case: the words survive while everything else has crumbled.
