LESSON 4 · Verses That Moved the World
The Nuyorican Poets Cafe
Before the Chicago slam, the Nuyorican Poets Cafe on New York's Lower East Side had been nurturing spoken word since the 1970s. Founded by Puerto Rican poet Miguel Algarín, it became a crucible where African American, Latino, and immigrant poets built a performance-based tradition rooted in community rather than academia. The Cafe treated poetry as social action — poets addressed gentrification, policing, immigration, and identity years before those topics entered mainstream literary discourse.
