LESSON 2 · Live With Intention
Aristotle's Political Vision
Aristotle believed that individual flourishing is impossible outside a well-functioning community. Humans are political animals — creatures whose nature can only be fully expressed in social life. A person living entirely alone would be either a beast or a god, not a human.
This means the quality of your community directly affects your capacity for virtue. Living in a corrupt society makes individual virtue harder. Living in a just society makes it easier. Personal ethics and political structures are inseparable in Aristotle's framework.
The practical implication: investing in your community is not charity but self-interest properly understood.
