Cynicism Versus Cynicism

Modern cynicism means doubting everyone's motives. Ancient Cynicism meant the opposite — a commitment to radical authenticity. Diogenes did not challenge people out of bitterness; he believed they could live more honestly.

The Cynics argued that social conventions exist to benefit the powerful, not the virtuous. Fine clothes, wealth, and status were all performances meant to win approval from people whose opinions should not matter. True freedom required stripping away these layers until only the essential human remained.
