Not Breaking Is a Skill

Resilience is not a personality trait you either have or lack. It is a set of skills and mindsets you can develop. Research from the American Psychological Association points to the same conclusion: resilient people are not those who avoid hardship — they are those who learn to process it and keep moving.

The word comes from the Latin resilire — to spring back. But modern psychology has expanded the definition. Resilience is not just returning to baseline after a hit; it can also mean adapting, integrating what happened, and sometimes experiencing post-traumatic growth. Growth is possible after crisis, but it is not guaranteed or required for resilience.
