The Experience Machine

Philosopher Robert Nozick designed a devastating thought experiment. A machine can give you any experience you want — perfectly simulated, indistinguishable from reality. You could feel like a hero, a lover, a genius. Would you plug in permanently?

Most people say no. They want to actually accomplish things, not just feel like they did. This suggests we value something beyond pleasure — authenticity, real achievement, genuine connection. If hedonism were the whole truth, the machine should be irresistible. The fact that it is not points past pleasure itself.
