LESSON 1 · What Makes Us Happy?
Beyond Pleasure Seeking
The hedonism debate reveals something important about human nature: we are more complex than any single theory can capture. Pleasure matters, but it is not the only thing that matters. People voluntarily endure pain for causes they believe in, relationships they value, and achievements that require suffering.
The marathon runner, the devoted parent, the scientist spending years on a problem — none of these people are maximizing pleasure. They are pursuing something that includes pleasure but extends beyond it.
Hedonism's greatest contribution is not its answer but its question: what makes life genuinely good? Every serious philosophy must eventually respond to that challenge.
