LESSON 3 · What Makes Us Happy?
Flow and Flourishing
Csikszentmihalyi's research on flow shows that the happiest moments are not passive or relaxing. They occur when you are fully stretched by a challenge that matches your skills. Too easy and you are bored. Too hard and you are anxious. The sweet spot produces complete absorption.
Flow helps explain why retirement can bring restlessness rather than relief. Without challenge, the mind has nothing to fully engage. The practical move: build at least one activity into your day that demands your full attention and skill. It produces more lasting well-being than any amount of passive entertainment.
