Buddhist Non-Attachment

Buddhism identifies attachment (upadana) as the root of suffering. This is frequently misunderstood as emotional detachment or not caring. It actually means releasing the demand that things be different from how they are right now.

You can love someone deeply without demanding that they never change, leave, or disappoint you. You can work toward a goal passionately without being destroyed if it fails. Non-attachment is not the absence of caring. It is caring fully while holding the outcome with an open hand.
