LESSON 5 · What Makes Us Happy?
Pleasure Redefined
Epicurus defined pleasure not as indulgence but as the absence of pain in the body (aponia) and the absence of disturbance in the mind (ataraxia). His highest pleasure was sitting in the garden with friends, eating simple food, and having good conversation.

He actually warned against intense pleasures because they create dependency and lead to greater pain when they end. Rich food brings stomach problems. Luxury brings anxiety about losing it. The pleasures that cannot be taken from you are the most valuable — a calm mind, a simple meal, the company of friends.
