LESSON 5 · What Makes Us Happy?

The Misunderstood Legacy

History treated Epicurus unfairly. His Christian critics, who dominated Western thought for centuries, caricatured him as a glutton and hedonist who worshipped pleasure above all else. The reality was almost the opposite. Epicurus lived on bread, water, and cheese, and considered simple meals with friends the highest pleasure available.

The distortion happened because Epicurus challenged religious authority. His claim that gods do not interfere in human affairs and that death is simply nonexistence directly threatened the church's power over believers' fears. Discrediting his character was easier than refuting his arguments.
