LESSON 5 · What Makes Us Happy?

Friendship as Foundation

Epicurus considered friendship the most important part of a good life — more important than wealth, fame, or romantic love. He practiced what he preached by building communal living in the Garden, where philosophical conversation and shared meals were the main activities.

His reasoning was practical. Friendship provides the security that reduces anxiety: knowing someone will help you in a crisis is more comforting than any amount of money. Friends also offer honest feedback, intellectual stimulation, and simple companionship — all of it free and inexhaustible.
