LESSON 7 · What Makes Us Happy?
What Adaptation Cannot Touch
The treadmill is not perfectly efficient. Research shows some things resist adaptation better than others. People do not fully adapt to chronic commuting stress, noise pollution, or interpersonal conflict. These keep eroding well-being without becoming normal.

On the positive side, people adapt slowly to social connections, autonomy, and activities that produce flow. A fulfilling relationship or meaningful work provides recurring hits of satisfaction that the treadmill cannot fully flatten.
