LESSON 3 · Philosophy of Love
The Ladder of Love
Plato describes love as a ladder (the Scala Amoris) with specific rungs. First, you love one beautiful body. Then you recognize beauty across all bodies. Then you see beauty in souls and character. Then in activities and laws. Then in knowledge. Finally, you perceive the Form of Beauty itself — eternal, unchanging, perfect.

Each rung does not replace the one below but transforms your understanding of what attracted you in the first place. The person who reaches the top does not stop loving individuals. They understand what they were loving all along: a glimpse of something eternal reflected in something temporary.
