LESSON 3 · Philosophy of Love
Eros as Philosophical Engine
Plato's most radical claim is that erotic desire and philosophical inquiry are the same force at different levels. Both involve longing for something beyond your current state. This means philosophy is not a cold intellectual exercise — it is driven by the same passion that drives love.
Plato grounded the intellectual life in a feeling everyone has had. You need no special training to understand desire. You need only to follow where it leads when it points beyond the physical toward something eternal.
