LESSON 4 · Philosophy of Love

The Four Requirements

Fromm said any art rests on the same four disciplines, and love is no exception.

  • Discipline — practicing consistently, not only when you feel like it.
  • Concentration — being fully present with the person in front of you, not half-listening.
  • Patience — letting love grow on its own timeline instead of forcing fast results.
  • Supreme concern — making love the most important thing in your life, not a side project.

Fromm warned that modern culture quietly undermines all four. It trains us toward distraction, instant rewards, and constant busyness — the opposite of patient, focused practice.
