LESSON 6 · Philosophy of Love
Destiny vs. Growth Beliefs
Psychologist C. Raymond Knee identified two relationship belief systems. Destiny believers think there is one right person out there, and finding them is the key to a great relationship. Growth believers think relationships succeed through effort, communication, and mutual development.

Research paints a more nuanced picture than "one belief always wins." Destiny believers often report higher satisfaction early on, when a new relationship still feels effortless. But growth beliefs predict a slower decline in satisfaction over time and better coping when conflict arrives. Destiny believers tend to read early conflict as evidence they chose wrong, leaning toward exit rather than repair; growth believers tend to read the same conflict as a normal challenge to work through.
