LESSON 6 · Philosophy of Love

Alternative Love Models

Several philosophical traditions offer alternatives to the soulmate model. The Stoics taught that love is a discipline you practice with whoever life brings you. Buddhist traditions hold that attachment to a specific person creates suffering, while open-hearted care for whoever is present brings peace.

Confucian philosophy treats marriage as a partnership built around family and community, not the fulfillment of individual destiny. Across all three, the emphasis is on building a respectful relationship through daily effort, not on finding a predetermined match.
