LESSON 1 · Justice, Truth & the Big Questions
The Analects in Context
The Analects were not written by Confucius himself. His students compiled them over several generations after his death, creating a text that captures his conversational teaching style rather than systematic philosophy.
The format matters. Confucius answered the same question differently depending on who asked. When a bold student asked about courage, he emphasized caution. When a timid student asked, he emphasized action. Teaching was adapted to the learner, not delivered as universal prescription. The right action depended on the situation, the relationships involved, and the character of the person acting.
