The Veil in Practice
The veil of ignorance is used as a practical tool far beyond philosophy. Mediators apply it to resolve disputes: you could end up on either side of this agreement. Corporate ethics boards and constitutional lawyers use it too. Its power lies in its simplicity — you need no philosophical training. Ask of any proposed rule whether you would accept it without knowing your place in the resulting system. That single question clears away most self-serving reasoning at once. Critics note that pure impartiality may be impossible: we can never fully forget who we are.
