He silently raised one finger
Gutei answered every question about Buddhism the same way: he silently raised a single finger, pointing past words toward direct experience. The traditional account says that when a young attendant began mimicking the gesture to mock it, Gutei used a shocking lesson to show the boy that imitating a form is not the same as understanding it. The story is told as a parable, not a model to copy.
