LESSON 1 · Wisdom of the East

Zen and Western Psychology

Modern psychology has converged with insights long cultivated in Buddhist meditation. Mindfulness-based therapies, influenced by traditions including Zen, Vipassana, and yoga, are now used as evidence-based treatments for depression, anxiety, and chronic pain.

Jon Kabat-Zinn developed Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction as a structured eight-week program that translated contemplative practices into a clinical setting. Its practices overlap with Zen in sitting, observing thoughts without judgment, and returning attention to the present moment, but MBSR is not simply Zen with the religion removed. The convergence suggests attention training can work across belief systems.
