LESSON 2 · Wisdom of the East
The Trimurti
One influential Hindu framework organizes cosmic functions into the Trimurti: Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver, and Shiva the destroyer. Some traditions read them as three faces of one ultimate reality, while others center Vishnu, Shiva, the Goddess, or other forms more strongly. The shared idea is that creation, preservation, and dissolution all belong to the cosmic process.

Destruction is not the villain in this story. Shiva's destruction is necessary for renewal. Old forms must dissolve for new ones to emerge. Autumn must kill the leaves so spring can grow new ones. The Hindu universe does not march from beginning to end.
