Filial Piety and Social Harmony
Xiao (filial piety) — devotion to parents and family — is the foundation of Confucian society. Confucius reasoned that if you cannot treat your own parents with respect and care, you will never treat strangers or citizens well.

The logic scales upward: respect in the family produces respect in the community, which produces respect in government, which produces a harmonious state. This bottom-up approach to social order is the opposite of top-down authoritarian control. Real-world application requires patience — character forms slowly, one relationship at a time.
