LESSON 3 · Wisdom of the East
Harmony and Conflict
Confucian harmony (he) is often misunderstood as uniformity or the suppression of disagreement. Confucius explicitly distinguished harmony from conformity: "The exemplary person seeks harmony, not sameness." Genuine harmony includes diverse voices contributing to a richer whole.
Think of the difference between an orchestra and unison. An orchestra blends different instruments playing different parts; unison is everyone playing the same note. Confucius valued the orchestra — a society where varied roles, perspectives, and talents combine into something richer than any individual contribution.
In this tradition, conflict is handled by restoring the relationship rather than assigning blame.
