Wu Wei

Wu wei is the most counterintuitive concept in Daoism. Literally "non-action," it does not mean doing nothing. It means acting without forcing, striving, or imposing your will against the natural grain of things.

A skilled musician in flow does not think about each note — the music plays itself through them. A river does not try to reach the ocean — it simply follows the terrain. Wu wei is effortless effectiveness: achieving results by aligning with the way things naturally work rather than fighting.
